Who Are The Piqua Shawnee Tribe?
Currently, there are nine tribes that are recognized by the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission. One of these nine tribes is the Piqua Shawnee tribe. This is a tribe that has existed in parts of what is currently Alabama for hundreds of years now and evidence can be found of this tribe all the way back to what would be the 17th century. Many people in this area have likely heard of this tribe before. This article is going to help you learn more about what the Piqua Shawnee tribe has done and how they have come to exist as they are today.
The Shawnee tribe was originally from the same area that Indiana and Ohio exist today. The Piqua section of the Shawnee tribe was one of five divisions and this specific division was named because of the legend of an evil man that died and came back to help a group of Shawnee members walk in harmony together. Coming out of their fire through their smoke, this man would appear in front of the Shawnee people as a man that came back from being dead.
After some time, these people were forced to disperse due to the fact that other tribes wanted what they had. Some of the members of the tribe that scattered were able to land in the current state of Alabama. Once they landed there, the Piqua Shawnee interacted with other tribes that were located in this area and learn how to live among them rather than against them. When traders came through the area and interacted with the variety of tribesmen and tribeswomen, the traders usually thought that they were just one large tribe rather than being a variety of smaller tribes that got along well. There were many wars that happened in the next few centuries and during this time, there were many different people that wanted to find refuge from the wars and decided to go to the Shawnee Picqua tribe in the south due to their resources. As years went by, the Shawnee Picqua tribe started to grow more and more and gain more members than ever before.
Some of the historians think that the people in the Shawnee tribe have possibly lived in Alabama longer than any other place. Some of the archaeologists think that the evidence dates back to somewhere around 1685.
In today’s world, many people are ancestors of this tribe and many of them still happen to live in Alabama. Many families within the tribe ended up in different areas of the country, however, due to political policies that would come about later during the Andrew Jackson administration. While information on the Piqua Shawnee tribe is still available, there is a lot of information that was lost due to the many people that had to leave.
